Acne Scars: Understanding the Different Types

Acne scars are not all the same, and the type of scar matters when deciding how to approach treatment. A person may have more than one type at the same time, and dark marks left after acne are not necessarily scars.

Common types of acne scars

Atrophic scars are depressed areas where the skin has lost some of its normal supporting structure. They are commonly described as ice-pick, boxcar or rolling scars.

Ice-pick scars are narrow and relatively deep. Boxcar scars tend to have more clearly defined edges and can be shallow or deeper. Rolling scars create an uneven, wave-like texture because of changes beneath the surface.

Raised scars, known as hypertrophic or keloid scars, are different because the scar tissue is elevated rather than depressed. They require a different clinical approach.

Scars versus post-acne marks

After acne heals, many people develop brown or red marks. These can be mistaken for scars. Post-inflammatory pigmentation may gradually improve, while a true structural scar usually requires a different treatment strategy.

Correct identification is therefore important. Treating pigmentation as if it were a structural scar, or choosing a scar procedure without assessing active acne, may not give the desired outcome.

Can acne scars be removed completely?

No treatment can responsibly promise complete removal of acne scars. The aim is usually to make scars less noticeable and improve overall texture. The degree of improvement depends on scar type, depth, skin characteristics, active acne and the treatment selected.

Treatment may involve procedures designed for particular scar patterns, sometimes in a staged or combined plan. The right option should be chosen after examining the skin rather than selecting a package based only on photographs or advertisements.

Why timing matters

If significant active inflammatory acne is still present, controlling the acne may be an important first step. Once the skin is more stable, scar treatment can be planned according to the remaining texture changes.

Sun protection and appropriate skincare are also important because inflammation and pigmentation can affect how the skin looks during the treatment journey.

At Xkinovate, acne scars are approached with attention to scar type, skin characteristics, realistic expectations and long-term skin health.
